Book Review: Real Food for Mother and Baby

I’ve been reading lots and lots of books in the process of writing my own. Many of them are only good for a tidbit or two. Some of them I can’t stand all together. Some of them are great. And some of them are a little disappointing. Well, why not share a few of these with you? I have read way more than I can possibly write about but I’ll try to review a few here and there.

I recently nearly finished, but just didn’t, Nina Plank’s Real Food for Mother and Baby.

At first I thought the book was great. She’ not Paleo – she eats grains and legumes – but whatever. Lots of healthy peoples around the world include a little fermented grains and legumes. It never worked for me, I don’t think it’s ideal human food, but it clearly doesn’t harm non-modern people terribly. So that’s not my beef with her book. It’s the tone I didn’t like once she got into the diet for pregnant women.

The Danger of Fertility Awareness

UPDATE: Some people are upset with me for implying that fertility awareness is dangerous. Fair enough. FAM is a very reliable method. What is not always reliable is us. Maybe I should have titled the post thus:

Don’t Be An Idiot About Fertility Awareness

As you may recall, I learned about recognizing the signs of fertility earlier last year. It’s really quite easy to do when your hormones are well balanced and you eat plenty of protein and nutrients and keep the carbohydrates fairly low (i.e. not high).

When a woman’s body is healthy, it  speaks a clear language; all we have to do is know how to listen.

Rebuilding Fertility After the Birth Control Pill

If you are trying to get pregnant or if you are experiencing hormonal problems after stopping the pill, it is important to note that the pill depletes the body of certain nutrients which are important for fertility and hormonal balance.

Many healthy women can get pregnant soon after stopping the pill. According to Conceive magazine, most women get their first postpill period in four to six weeks, 80 percent will be ovulating by three months, and 95 percent within the year. Fun without babies!

For some, the increased fertility that accompanies eating a paleolithic diet is awesome, for others, not so awesome.

Personally, I do want to parent another primal kiddo, but it’s just not in the stars for me right now, so I am taking baby making precautions.

Whether you do or you don’t want to get pregnant, monitoring fertility signs is an important part of a contraceptive/pregnancy-planning strategy so you don’t get stuck taking fertility and birth control medications.
