Jerky Canon/Gun?
on: August 14, 2011, 20:16

I was just wondering if anyone has had any luck making homemade beef/turkey jerky? I've tried and failed miserably. I was thinking of investing into one of those "jerky canons/guns" that shape the jerky into nice strips.

Right now I'm spending a fortune on jerky/meat sticks for my girls (they LOVE them and they are so easy to pack for snacks, etc.) so I'd love to find a way to make my own.

I'd love any ideas/tips you might have!

Thanks,

Karen :)

I’m a personal trainer and nutritional therapist. I have 2 daughters 6,8 years old. We primarily follow the Weston A. Price philosophy for nutrition, however due to my daughters’ ADHD, we have been doing a very strict diet this summer that is grain-free, sugar-free and dairy-free. I’m noticing that both my girls are much calmer and centered.
I’m especially interested in lunch ideas from the group and dinners. Our repetoire for dinner has unfortunately become quite boring.
Looking forward to meeting other fabulous, health-conscious parents! :-)

Wow – I forgot I had one of those !

I have had the jerky "gun" for a long time, but I have not used it in years as making jerky with commercial "grade" ground beef freaked me out.

I did however make a few batches with the gun and they turned out great!

At the time I used the oven to dry the meat out and it worked good. I followed the instructions and used the spice pack that came with the gun.

I'm going to start using it again – this time with real beef (grass fed organic etc etc).

I'd also recommend a food dehydrator. I have one (http://www.excaliburdehydrator.com/) and love it.

Peace

I haven't used a gun, just my dehydrator like was posted above. I like to buy london broil cuts because they are cheap and already the right size to just cut up into thin slices and toss in the dehydrator.
